Ultraviolet (UV) light, mainly from the sun, is the single most significant cause of skin cancer. It damages DNA molecules of cells that turns normal cells into cancer. In very rare occasional. skin cancer can arise no relationship with UV.
Apart form causing skin cancer, UV light can also causes irreversible photo ageing of skin.
As said before, the vast majority of melanomas are caused by the sun. In fact, one UK study found that about 86 percent of melanomas can be attributed to exposure to UV radiation from the sun.
On the other hand, about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are also associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun.
Complete sun exposure avoidance is the best way to prevent skin cancer yet it may not be feasible in some circumstances. Fortunately, in case that sun exposure is inevitable, you can always find some measures to limit the damage it caused.
Blocking UV light by apply sunscreen to exposed skin, wearing long sleeves clothes, hat and staying under shade outdoor, limiting the time of sun exposure is the most effective measure to reduce your risk.
Regular daily use of an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen reduces the risk of developing melanoma by 50 percent.
Two types of sun screens are available, physical and chemical. They have their own pros and cons. It is advisable to consult your healthcare providers to choose the suitable one.
