SKIN CANCER
Skin is the largest organ system in human body and not surprisingly skin cancer is a common problem especially among people with fair skin. It has been reported that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70 and more than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour.
There are two types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma.
The most common non-melanoma are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. They cause local tissue destruction and occasionally spread to other parts of body.
Melanoma, on the other hand, is a malignant and aggressive cancer. Most skin cancer deaths are caused by melanoma.
Early diagnosis by screening may results in early treatment. When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent.
